Move and the Way Will Open

January 9, 2012

Happy New Year!  I love this proverb.  Do you?  When I hear it I think of being in action, being strong and motivated toward a personal goal.

In a more literal sense, moving is what I'd like to suggest you do more this year.   Finding ways to incorporate more physical activity into your day is the best way to meet the "I want to be fitter and healthier" resolution that 95% of Americans declare is their intent on January 1.

Standing still never got you to where you wanted to be, ever. Whether it was graduating college (you needed to apply, attend and do the coursework) or earning that promotion (you had to impress the boss, work late nights and maybe take additional training) or learning to bake a perfect loaf of bread (you had to practice recipes over and over and maybe even take a baking class).

Would you believe me if I guaranteed that if you moved more your life would be more joyful?  That you would find new, creative ideas?  Or answers to troubling questions?

Uh huh.  Exercise is that powerful.  However, if you subscribe to the "I need to see it to believe it" approach to change, you may never get to the point of "AHA!"

So, my New Year's wish for you all is to suspend past judgments about physical activity, especially in relation to you or your loved ones cancer diagnosis, and get out and dance, walk, ski, skate or play.   You can do it, whether you have never put on a pair of sneakers or you were a 4 letter high school athlete.   And, it's good for you, on every day of this New Year.
