Our Programs
Exercise
Strength and Balance Classes
Exercise can produce positive changes in energy levels, joint flexibility and muscular strength; it can also produce positive changes in an individual's sense of quality of life, mood, and confidence. These classes will be designed to improve posture, balance and muscular strength, specifically targeting core strength. We will use dumbbells, medicine balls, stability balls and body weight as tools to enhance flexibility, muscular strength, balance and range of motion.
Yoga for Life
These classes will be offered for various levels and provide a warm and lively atmosphere that is conducive for all participants. Our instructors will provide the tools a cancer survivor will need to begin the journey by helping stretch the body, release muscular tension, experience what meditation is all about and deepen a connection to others.
Psychosocial Support
The Center will offer a wide range of psychosocial support opportunities in a warm, homelike environment, including group support sessions, targeted to specific types of cancer, and on-line support options, all facilitated by professional licensed counselors.
The Center will become a community meeting place where survivors can simply drop in with whatever emotions they are experiencing that day, to talk with other survivors or staff members, read a book, or watch a selction from our online video series in a dedicated lounge area.
Education
Our goal at the Center is to educate survivors so that they are empowered with tools that will help them live a healthy life, in order to reduce the risk of developing other chronic diseases down the road.
Seminars for Survivors
The Center will host seminars in nutrition and exercise for a broad audience of survivors, with guest speakers and certified professionals in their respective fields. Providing survivors with factual information based on the latest research in survivorship is vital to getting survivors on a path to wellness.
Survivorship Guides
At the Center, we will produce educational materials that are specific to cancer survivorship and using our exercise and nutritional programs as a core component. These guides will be distributed in the local community and across the state through our CT Challenge Survivor Network.
Video Series
A series of instructional and informational videos will be produced that can be viewed on our website and other social media channels, in addition to the Center, reaching a much larger portion of the cancer survivor population.
Professional Education
The Center will host a series of continuing education workshops for exercise instructors so that they can become certified to work with cancer survivors. Our goal is to enable these professionals to go back into their local communities and provide a resource that is currently not available to cancer survivors.
Volunteers are crucial to the ability of the CT Challenge to direct resources where they are most needed, helping cancer survivors. If you are interested in volunteering at the Center, please contact us.
