Energy Balance, What is it and Why You Should Strive for It

I talk a lot about increased physical activity and how important it is for cancer patients and survivors.  You may have heard the term “Energy Balance” – it sounds good, right?  Balancing sounds like something we do a lot of, but Energy, well, energy is something you might not think you have a lot of after a cancer diagnosis.

Researchers use this wonderful term “Energy Balance” to describe how weight, diet and physical activity influence health.  I focus on the positive aspects of increased physical activity (managed weight and a healthy diet are the other important components) as my work is all about supporting folks to move more with the goal of improving quality of life, no matter what their medical situation may be.

Physical activity, in general terms is any body movement produced by your skeletal muscles. So, every time you move, from biking to swimming (more vigorous activity) to dressing, washing dishes or playing with your grandchildren (low to moderate activity) results in an expenditure of energy.  See?  You are already doing it!

Researchers are learning more every day about the benefits of physical activity in reducing the risk of many cancers, and decreasing the risk of recurrence for those with the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that adults do 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week (30 minutes 5 or more days of the week). This may sound like a lot and it is- especially if you are just staring out- I suggest you consider simply moving more in your normal day – say using the rest room farthest away from your office, or walking one time around the perimeter of the grocery store before doing your shopping as a way to ease yourself into increased activity. Energy Balance is a blessing we can all strive for, and the benefits are worth it!
